Nationally, providers, vendors and health care purchasers are developing projects to improve health care outcomes, particularly for people with chronic diseases.
RIBGH is pleased to announce that on December 7th we will be joined by two nationally respected leaders in this effort, Dr. Barry Bunting, Clinical Manager in the Pharmacy Department at Mission Health and Hospitals of North Carolina and Dr. Jan Berger, Senior Vice President & Chief Clinical Officer, CVS/Caremark, who will present some of their work. In addition, RI Health Commissioner, Chris Koller, will offer a perspective on the fit of these efforts with local initiatives in the Rhode Island market.

Dr. Barry Bunting, Clinical Manager in the Pharmacy Department at Mission Health and Hospitals of North Carolina. The Asheville Project, pioneered by the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists, has been successful in obtaining reimbursement for educational and "coaching" services for people with diabetes, and documenting long-term clinical, financial and personal improvements for patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and asthma. Dr. Bunting is the recipient of the 2007 American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Clinical Research Paper Award for his work on "The Asheville Project". Dr. Bunting's work on the Asheville Project has led to numerous other demonstration projects nationwide. The Asheville Project was featured on page one of the New York Times in late December, and on NBC Nightly News in January.
Jan Berger, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical officer for
CVS/Caremark, is an advocate of forward-thinking plans that leverage
knowledge to manage their pharmacy costs will see better returns on their
investments She herself is a knowledge enthusiast, holding several
academic degrees, including a masters in health law from Loyola, as well as
an academic position teaching at the Northwestern University School of
Medicine. Dr. Berger also is working on an MBA. Dr. Berger is a
board-certified pediatrician with clinical experience in private practice
and managed care. Prior to her current role, she was medical director for
managed care at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Before that, she
spent 13 years at Rush Prudential Health Plans, where she held a variety of
positions including medical director for quality management.
Chris Koller, Rhode Island Health Insurance Commissioner is well known to the RIBGH membership and has presented regularly to them on the progress of the Carcieri Administration's Five Point Health Care Agenda to achieve a common vision of a health care system that is driven by all its residents and that
focuses on wellness as well as care of the sick.
